Why Tim Walz's Love for Crazy Taxi Matters in 2024

This week at the Democratic National Convention, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is getting ready to formally receive the Democratic party's nomination for vice president. And we might have discovered more about his traditional gaming habits right before that occurs.

VP Candidate Tim Walz, Noted Dreamcast Lover, Was Apparently A Crazy Taxi Guy

After Walz was revealed as a Dreamcast aficionado in a New York Times feature, he was chosen as Kamala Harris's running mate. He coached high school football, and players on the squad remembered him telling them things that they could relate to, like the time his wife took away his Dreamcast because he played it too much. This naturally led to rumors about what game had captured his attention for so long.

According to IGN, it was able to identify the original owner of Walz's Dreamcast, Tom Johnson, after following up with a number of subsequent owners. While interning for Walz's congressional campaign, Johnson saw that Walz occasionally brought in a box containing personal goods that he intended to donate but thought the interns might find more useful. A Dreamcast was one of them, and it was hardly utilized at the congressional office. In the end, Johnson brought the Dreamcast to college with him, and he recalled finding a copy of Crazy Taxi already installed when he did.

It may not have been Walz's favorite game, as Johnson points out, but Crazy Taxi was a popular Dreamcast title. However, the fact that it was positioned within the console implies a certain degree of fondness for the driving game. And unless he brings it up during his DNC speech, that's probably the most conclusive response we'll hear on the subject. That's not completely out of the question, considering his upbeat style in previous talks.
